The terrible 2's have nothing on the behavior issues your 5 year old is exhibiting. There are many differences between the behavior of a 2 year old and that of a 5 year old. As a parent, you'll be faced with new and more difficult challenges. The main difference between a 2 and 5 year old is that a 5 year old is much more aware of what they're capable of doing. They are no longer babies or toddlers. A 2 year old isn't quite sure what to do with the extra independence they have recently acquired. Your 5 year old is probably running all out with his new-found freedom. You are aware that this new independence is getting your 5 year old into more trouble. Your child has advanced past the toddler phase and can do many more things then before. Confidence for your boy or girl at this stage is a good thing and should be encouraged often. However, confidence that is out of control can lead to poor behavior as your child begins to test the waters. They will want to push your rules as far as they possible can. We want our children to be confident and happy people. However, we have to always keep safety and respect in mind. At the same time we have to be careful not to discourage them to take chances and grow. Without risk there is no reward. However, the risk can also have major consequences if you're not careful in how you encourage risk. When I say "risk" I don't mean it in a harmful or dangerous way. For example, if you want your child to be more out going, you may encourage him or her to raise their hand if they know the answer to a teacher's question. But if they get the answer wrong and the others laugh, it may set back your child's confidence. This is the risk they must take in order to advance and mature to the next stage in childhood. The personality your 5 year old will have for the rest of their lives begins in how you help shape them today. A proven guide of "parent tips" can go a long way to create a wonderful relationship between you and your children.
