The need for proficient writing is greater than ever. The growth of the internet has brought out a proliferation of people who think they can write, while the Web is constantly screaming for qualified professionals who know how to literally cross their t's and dot their i's. Yet with a market thick with wannabes, a student of the craft needs to not only pay the rent, but get some recognition.

There is a way though. A number of professional and philanthropic societies have set up writing contests that not only can offer reasonable payouts, but also national, even international, recognition. Win a few of these, and they will certainly make a writer look a lot better than just getting top grades in college. Staying informed about the most recent information about online scholarships may speed your success.

A good one to consider is the WRHC Scribendi Writing and Art Contest. It is open to college students at all levels and in a number of different writing styles, from poetry through non-fiction essays. To apply, a student must supply the WRHC three samples of his or her work based on the restrictions for each category. If selected, the applicant not only gets the work published, but an award of $250.

For high school students trying to get their first exposure, another excellent outlet is the Scholastic Arts & Writing Award. It also has categories for a number of different forms of writing. It offers prizes starting down as low as the state level but can go as high as a handful of international awards. On the national level alone, the winners get $1,000 scholarships.

Many writers want to enter the children's field. Before they start setting themselves up for a Calder or Newberry award, they can start with the Books-A-Million contest. Each year, it accepts one complete but unpublished manuscript and awards $1,000.

There are also contests that can go quite a long way towards supplementing a young poet's education. For example, the Poetry Foundation offers the Ruth Lilly Fellowship, which awards multiple $15,000 scholarships once a year to a winning student. The only restriction is the poet must be between the ages of 21 and 31. There is also the Wallace Stegner Fellowship, which awards its winners a $26,000 stipend to be used for tuition, expenses, and insurance. Each year, the Stegner awards 10 of these awards, which are handed out over two years. Checking the internet for more details about online universities is a smart move.

There is even a contest for budding science fiction writers. Every three months, The L. Ron Hubbard Writers of The Future Contest accepts three previously unpublished short stories or novelettes (fewer than 17,000 words) in science fiction or fantasy. The first place winner gets $1000, second earns $750, and third $500. From there, the four first place winners of the year are set up against each other for an annual grand prize of $4,000.
