The discoveries of Columbus and Vasco de Gama extended the geographical horizon without boundary. Other discoverers followed in the footsteps of Columbus and de Gama, and their discoveries ultimately resulted in man's conquest of the air, the exploration of the Polar region, and the scaling of soaring mountain-peaks.

Where does the spirit of discovery come from? Imagine how different the world would be if, when they were young and impressionable, the Wright brothers had been persuaded not to explore the world around them. The spirit of discovery requires nurturing.

Wynette Mills has written a wonderful book for children aged 4 to 8. It's called The Backyard Explorer: The Nana and Me Series. It's designed to encourage children as they awake to the mysteries and joys of the world. And in this case, the 'world' exists in their backyards.

In The Backyard Explorer, a child and his Nana spend the day traveling through the wondrous avenues of exploration and discovery. They make red syrup for a friendly hummingbird, search for lost kittens, watch as butterflies cavort and dance in the air, find a mouse under the house, and imagine what it's like to be a tree.

Mills tells her story in a simple, charming way, using high-action verbs and adjectives that stimulate young readers' imaginations. Accompanied by outstanding, colorful illustrations, the story acquaints children and adults with a valuable lesson: the miraculous glory of life and all it has to offer. There's also an underlying message. The one that says adults can't give children what the adults don't have themselves - a passion to explore.

The Backyard Explorer is the perfect example of what a book for children should be like. It instills respect for life, generosity, and enthusiasm by way of exploring one's own backyard.
