The most effective way to study for your Cisco Certified Networks Associate (CCNA) exam is to do self study by reading a CCNA book. There are many CCNA books in the market today for this purpose. Here are 5 tips to ensure you buy the right books so that you increase your chances of passing the exam the first time:

1. Is the book for a current version of the exam? - Cisco frequently updates the CCNA exam to ensure that is up to date with the market requirements. If you buy a book for an old exam, you might find it to be missing some important and new material. The latest version of the exam code can be found on the Cisco website and you can check there to ensure that the book you are buying is current.

2. Practice exams - Does the CCNA book come with practice exams? Practice exams are a good way to have a feel for the real exam. They also allow you to review the material to ensure that you are already familiar with the required material and to pinpoint places where you might need more revision.

3. Format of practice tests - If the book includes practice exams, are these written exams or is a computerized testing engine included? The actual CCNA exam is a computerized testing exam, so it is important to have a good feel for the computerized exam before paying money and attempting the actual CCNA test.

4. Technical skill of authors - Who is the author of the book? Check the certifications and qualifications of the author before deciding. Most CCNA book authors are CCIEs (the highest certification accorded for Cisco technical skill currently) and have many years of experience. Do check the technical qualifications of the reviewers as well.

5. Electronic copy of book - If you want to study for the exam a bit at a time while commuting, you might not want to bring along the whole book, but maybe just a chapter. If you are able to print portions of the electronic book, it would be much more convenient to study and prepare for the exam.
