When you were a kid, you may have secretly used a baby monitor to listen in on your neighbor's telephone conversations. However, if you were to review baby monitors today, you would find that they can do much more than simply transmit or pick up sounds. Some systems even have video monitoring. Therefore, when you are picking out a monitoring system for you and your family, you may actually end up finding it to be very difficult to choose and might even find it to be rather confusing, because there are so many options available. Now, you might be thinking to yourself, that you just want to find the simplest monitoring "contraption" which has the littlest feedback squeal, and want to keep things as simple as possible. However, all you need to do is know exactly what to look for when choosing your next baby monitor, so use these tips as a guideline.

The first thing you can do is find out what products have been used by people in your family and anyone else you know. Just as importantly, are there any particular monitors that someone had to discard for some reason? Asking around and getting reviews can help you figure out which monitors are worth the money and which aren't. This can also be a good way to get a monitor for free from someone who no longer needs it. Then you wouldn't even have to worry about shopping around to find the best monitor! Always ask for specific information about the monitors. Sometimes people will give you vague or general answers about something; these won't help you make the right decision. How much surveillance are you looking for? There are some parents who need to be able to track every second of the time they spend apart from their infants. Other parents find it to be too nerve racking to be constantly sitting in front of the system watching it out of the fear that something may happen. But it all depends on your personal preferences, and if you want the added security in knowing that your baby is really ok, you may want to find a system which incorporates both video and audio surveillance systems. Since more extensive systems can kill a lot of your time, because you will be sitting there watching them, some parents may choose to still go with a simple audio surveillance system instead of the full on system. The type features you need should be the only thing that determines this part of your decision, because it does not reflect on how good or bad of a parent you are if you choose only the audio surveillance.

And another item of convenience is a baby monitor with an alarm when the battery starts running low. Of course you'll need to either change batteries or charge them, you won't want the unit to stop working during the night. You'll save time and worry with a feature like that.

How many options do you want? If you are living in a small home, you may not even have room for a more extensive system, which is why you might need something more along the lines of a base station or single receiver setup. If you have more space available in your home, a system which includes multiple receivers may be a better option. Also, you should remember that if you are going to choose a multiple receiver system, the best ones are the ones which have both outbound and inbound communication abilities. Deciding on more than one receiver can be useful if you don't always want to be carrying it around, and also is useful if you have more than one child.

Taking the time to consider the size, functions, and toher aspects of your system will ensure that you end up finding the right system for you and your family. You should also assess the lifetime expectancy of the system, in case you want to have more children in the near future as well, and also so that you know it will last for the entire time you need it to monitor your baby. Your final decision should be one that reflects the needs of your entire household, so that you can choose a monitor which will do exactly what you need it to do.
