In part because of aging baby boomers, the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects that by 2018, some 14.3 million jobs that existed in healthcare in 2008 are to have increased to about 17 million. Information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics also shows that job candidates in some occupations might fare best in instances where they hold a bachelors degree; others might need a doctoral degree. Changes with regard to bachelors degree offerings and others in a variety of healthcare subjects include: Where nursing students at a Texas university now study as part of a consortium program, they are to participate in studies that are part of the institution's own School of Nursing. In an announcement in October, the president of that institution noted that the new nursing school would allow the college to expand the capacity of its nursing program. The new nursing school is expected to open in 2013. A major university in Massachusetts now has its own Department of Radiation Oncology, according to an October announcement. First-year medical students at this college would be provided a rare opportunity to participate in studies that are a part of the Department of Radiation and Oncology, the announcement noted. This university also offers a School of Public Health, where students can participate in bachelors degree, masters degree and doctoral degree offerings. A West Coast university recently announced that a doctoral degree in nursing has been approved by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. As early as March 2010, however, this Irvine institution announced a new School of Nursing and Health Professions offering new bachelors degrees and masters degrees in subjects such as nursing, health risk and crisis communication and health administration. By January 2011, registered nurses who have already obtained bachelors degrees are expected to start their school of nursing courses, the institution's announcement noted. Students interested in pursuing online degrees in healthcare-related topics might note that a Minneapolis university in 2010 added at least four of them. The new offerings from that Minnesota college includes online doctoral degrees in public health, health administration and nursing practice and an online masters degree in health administration. Announcements from the institution note that in some states, program reviews are pending. In Orlando, Florida, a college announced in November that an associate degree program that it offers is to change to a bachelors degree program. That bachelors degree program, in nuclear medicine technology, has been selected by the Society of Nuclear Medicine Technologist Section as one of three pilot programs of its kind in the country, according to an announcement from that institution. The society has proposed that degrees at the bachelor level be required for entry level nuclear medicine technology jobs by 2015, the announcement noted. How these opportunities, as well as on line bachelor degree options, fit into your career is what you will learn.
