Mickey Kay Troxell, founder of Pegasus, spoke with Allen Cardoza and Dr. Melody Foxx from Answers for the Family Blog on L.A. Talk Radio. During the fascinating interview, she described how she discovered Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and how well it works to help people live happier, more fulfilling lives. In essence, EAP is a client based therapy that provides hands-on opportunities to experience new solutions, build healthy coping skills, and reduce stress. It develops tools for effectively managing an individual's internal happiness toward long-term recovery. Mental health and human development needs are addressed through this unique therapy. It has been useful in resolving communication and relationship issues, depression, anxiety, behavioral problems, eating disorders, ADD, ADHD, chemical dependency and substance abuse. Continuing Education (CE) programs for mental health professionals designed by Pegasus provide the highest education standards available anywhere. Pegasus also offers an Outreach Program, which provides disadvantaged children, at-risk youth, veterans, and Native Americans with free EAP. An experiential therapeutic treatment approach designed to manifest the ABC's of life for individuals and groups are offered by Pegasus ECT. The specific programs are called Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP), Horse Therapy, and Equine Jobs. With EAP, individuals will have the opportunity to explore behaviors and patterns that may create problems in their lives. The ABC's of mental health are Awareness, Behavior and Communication. Since non-verbal communication or body language is 97% of all communication, equine therapy is remarkably effective. For many people, healthy normal development can be hindered on an unconscious level. These problems can be resolved through honest, assertive verbal and non-verbal communication. Horses are honest, intuitive and nonjudgmental, which makes them perfect therapists. Through Horse Therapy, addictions and other behavioral problems can be cured through the non-verbal communication provided by a horse. Since human beings are usually not aware of their non-verbal cues, they generate counterproductive, mixed messages to others.
