If your child has done something wrong, it is not enough that you just let it go after applying consequences. You need to find out what is the cause of such behavior, so that you can avoid it from happening in the future. Aside from that, investigating about the real reason behind your child's misbehavior is also another way of helping your child with his problems.
If your child has done something wrong, it is not enough that you just let it go after applying consequences. You need to find out what is the cause of such behavior, so that you can avoid it from happening in the future. Aside from that, investigating about the real reason behind your child's misbehavior is also another way of helping your child with his problems. Investigating is totally different from arguing, remember that. After doing a mistake, a child is likely to have a lot of things in his head and is in no shape to argue. Ask your child simple and neutral questions in order to get the answers that you are looking for. Start with the fact that something happened, and stick with that. In every investigation, sticking with the facts is the most important. Do not give in to distractions and pour all your attention to what really happened. Even when your child is whining or making excuses, keep your eyes on the facts at hand. It is also significant for a parent to stay focused on what's happening in the present and not to look back to what happened in the past. With this, you must also avoid blaming him or other people over what happened in the past. Nor should a parent justify his actions or even the actions of his own child. The only way to do this is to separate your feelings from the issue. The moment you include your emotions in the equation, you will not be able to make sound decisions. Remember, you need to be objective and you must be very clear. Investigating why your child misbehaves is something that should be taken seriously. Contrary to what most people would insinuate with running a home or managing your children, you have to be business-like with them. It's the only way that your children will realize how serious you are about your rules although this doesn't mean you would not feel totally anything at all towards your children or that you won't allow your children to feel anything towards you. For sure that's not the case with successful businesses as well. Be honest with your child. Ask him, "I know there is a reason why you did that. I want to know about it." And when your child starts talking, make sure you listen and pay attention. Avoid giving side comments or reacting to it. Let your child speak and share his thoughts without prejudice from you.
