Preparation for a career as a graphic designer can start at a four-year, accredited art school.

Most visual arts schools typically offer concentrations in photography, painting, illustration, sculpture or graphic design. Major universities will offer undergraduate degree programs and possibly a graduate program as well. The typical degree earned is a bachelor of arts or a bachelor in fine arts.

Students too young for college can also enroll in art classes offered at a local campus. These classes are often available for kids at the high school level as well as younger.

Each school's curriculum is different. Depending upon the school, a student may concentrate more on theoretical perspectives versus putting in time in the art studio. Other art schools will push intense training in fundamental academic drawing and painting. The best curriculum will depend upon what field the student wants to go into when they graduate.

Successful artists typically have more than just raw talent. Successful artists also know how to structure their time, deal with people and work the business of being an artist. Raw talent is great, but knowing how to use that talent is just as important.

Formal education and career training helps aspiring artists reach their goals and realized their artistic potential. Life and careers can be hard work and loaded with potential career-ending obstacles, but education and training and help a talented artist reach their career goals.

If you see yourself working as a graphic designer for an ad agency or in the marketing department of a large company, you will want to earn a college degree. Almost all employers will want to see some proof of your talent, but they will also need to be assured that they are dealing with someone they will be able to depend upon. And proving that you can sit through four years of college is one way to prove it to them.

The skills you learn in college, along with the friends and contacts you make, will be with you your entire career. You will depend upon your skills to land jobs and successfully complete them. And your friends and contacts will forever offer you advice, encouragement and help all during your future career.
