If you lack these critical parenting skills you'll find your family life more difficult than it needs to be. Many parents have picked up some knowledge of parenting by recalling what their own parents did wrong. But, simply trying to avoid making the same mistakes as your own parents doesn't necessarily result in good parenting skills.

Parenting Skills Primer: If what you've been doing as a parent hasn't been working please don't blame your child. Children are a bit like a blank canvas is to an artist. If the artist can't paint she doesn't blame her canvas for the mess.

The common sense approach to good parenting skills is to keep what has been working for you and discard what hasn't been working.

The place to begin your skills upgrade is to do a parenting skills assessment. You can do this privately and at no cost by taking a Parenting Styles Quiz. this will reveal your top three parenting styles based on your own responses.

One site that offers a free parenting styles quiz can be found at www. parentalquiz.com. Results are not saved, shared or published except for your eyes only.

Child Behavior Management Skills Your goal as a parent is to guide them and teach them socialization skills like courtesy. Children also must be taught coping skills including how to deal with disappointment when the parent says "NO" and how to cope with frustrations.

Children may not have learned how to share or how to play easily with other children. These are all skills that they must be taught. Teaching a child good behavior is the job of the parent. Please don't try to foist this job off on the school system, the child's teachers or social workers. No one can substitute for a parent with good parenting skills.

To manage your child's behavior you'll need to be aware of a few things: 1. Children crave attention, especially from their parents. If they can't elicit positive attention they'll settle for negative attention. To children it is better to be yelled at than to be ignored

2. Boundaries are a good thing for a child. The simple act of setting and enforcing certain boundaries shows your child that you care and puts the structure into their life that makes them feel secure.

3. Good parenting means being consistent in how and when you discipline your children.

4. Consistency in providing discipline means that there will always be consequences for misbehavior.

5. Positive reinforcement like when you praise your child has about fifty times the impact as always being critical and always being negative. To get your child to want to please you be generous with praise, with your affection and with your time.

6. Don't overlook the importance of play. Children who play with their parents in a low-key, non-judgemental way thrive. Laugh and play every day with your child to see them blossom and to see your relationship with your child improve.

If you'll just learn and practice these basic parenting skills you'll soon see major improvements in your child's behavior and attitude!
