E-Commerce degrees are offered at different level;, but most students in this field receive a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and concentrate in the e-Commerce. A degree such as this includes classes that address marketing, computer, and internet strategies that are typically a part of a successful website or online business.

E-Commerce has three primary business models. The B2B model encompasses the portion of e-Commerce where businesses do business with each other. This generally includes large companies offering merchandise and services to smaller businesses who ultimately work with the end user. B2C is the model that outlines the e-Commerce interactions between businesses and consumers. This model represents most e-Commerce websites and includes anything that may be sold or downloaded from a business to the consumer. The last business model refers to consumers doing business with other consumers and is called C2C. These are websites bringing people together to buy, sell, or trade almost anything imaginable.

Perhaps, the greatest benefit of the e-Commerce business model is the fact that it is the most cost efficient way to open and run a business. Businesses engaged in this practice have overhead that is significantly lower than that of traditional brick and mortar businesses. This type of operation requires little, if any, rental costs, employee salaries, or any other bills that conventional store owners must routinely pay.

The very nature of an e-Commerce business permits it to operate around the clock; it realistically never needs to close. The concepts of distance and time have little relevance because the business can be accessed by anyone, anywhere, at any time. Most e-Commerce businesses do not require huge amounts of goods to operate successfully. A business' supplier typically absorbs the shipping costs as it will ship the merchandise directly to a customer.

Operating an e-Commerce business has few downfalls. Most of these drawbacks are easily overcome by prudent business decisions. The major disadvantage of an e-Commerce business is the difficulty in providing customers a personal touch. The business world refers to this ethereal asset as goodwill, which is the portion of a business that promotes repeated business transactions.
