Homeschooling - The Beginning

Homeschooling the Beginning - by Barbara Dykes

If you are thinking of homeschooling your children, whether yours by birth or adoption, you may well be feeling some concerns. I support the idea, borne out by Vicki Lynar (AACASA, June 2001) that for children adopted from overseas at school age, a period at home being homeschooled is beneficial. The change of culture which older migrant children face is dramatic enough without their being flung into the foreign, competitive and sometimes even cruel environment of school.

Supplementary Angles

Definition of Supplementary Angles

Two angles are said to be supplementary if the sum of their measures is 180°. Each angle is the supplement of the other.

Examples of Supplementary Angles

The following pairs of angles are supplementary. Each pair of angles adds up to 180°.

15°, 165°
45°, 135°
20°, 160°
72°, 108°
83°, 97°

More about Supplementary Angles

• When two lines intersect, forming four angles, the adjacent angles are always supplementary. (Adjacent angles are two angles that are next to each other.)

• Supplementary angles form a straight angle when adjacent. (A straight angle has a measure of 180°. Straight angle forms a straight line.)

Tips on How You Can Get Your Kids Working on Printable Worksheets

This article offers some ideas and practical tips on how you can get your child working on printable worksheets, whether you are homeschooling or simply making sure that your child does, and understands, any homework they may have been given.

Home Learning

It is a lot easier to teach your child or to help them with school homework if they have had experience of learning in the home. Very often moms teach their children a lot of skills without actually realising that the fun they are having is a great way for a child to learn. Silly games like spotting the number of red cars while out on a shopping trip or playing about with words by making up silly rhymes all contribute to your child’s education. The point is that you can still carry on with this type of learning activity and it will be a lot easier to incorporate printable worksheets into the fun and get your child working on them. Children love to draw and color and cut and paste so you can use this pleasure in a number of ways to make working on printable worksheets more enjoyable.

Compatible Numbers

Compatible Numbers

  • The word "compatible" means "well-matched". Compatible numbers are numbers that are friendly with each other.

For example:

15 and 5 are compatible numbers, because, 5 goes into 15 evenly ---- 15/5=3

So are 15 and 3, because, 3 goes into 15 evenly ---- 15/3=5

  • Compatible numbers make estimation or mental calculation easier. They are useful in estimating the sum, difference, product, or quotient. Compatible numbers are close in value to the actual numbers given in the problem. They often end in 0 or 5.

Let’s look at a few examples.

Learn To Read! Does Your Child Need Help?

Learning to read is not a natural skill that a child is born with. Until recent years, reading was thought to develop naturally when a child was ready, or "mature" enough. Today, it is understood that children do not learn to read spontaneously on their own. Many parents think that if their child is intelligent, curious and they read to them a lot, they will learn how to read without any problems. But evidence does not lead educators to accept these assumptions.

To learn to read, children must grasp certain skills necessary for reading. And those reading skills need to be taught explictly. No doubt, there will always be a small percentage of children who manage to learn to read without much explicit instruction. Those children, whether we recognize it or not, are able to teach themselves to read. The important thing to recognize here is that there is teaching involved. Reading is not an innate skill that we are born with.
