The pharmaceutical manufacturing sciences came into existence since the prehistoric man started realizing that things around him can be used in order to treat diseases and injuries. Many civilizations came into existence and records of ancient pharmaceutical manufacturing sciences can be found in there literature or any other different type of work.

Revolution in the field of medicine took place in 19th century. In 19th century physics, chemistry and biology along with other sciences were developed greatly resulting in development of pharmacy. Many discoveries and inventions were taking place during middle of 19th century. Discovery of DNA by crick and Watson opened new world in pharmacy and medicine. Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch are the founders of bacteriology. Bacteriology proved to be useful field for development of pharmacy. As diseases were caused by bacteria like cholera bacillus and tubercle bacillus. Also other bacteria are beneficial that can be used in many drugs and antibiotics. In Indian subcontinent many civilizations flourished. Hindus had a text called atharvaveda which was based on medicine. The knowledge of herbs and medicines was further used in developing ayurveda which is still an effective system of pharmacy and medicine. Zakaria Rhazes, Zahrawi, Sabur Ibn Sahl around 865-1013 A. D gave details of use of various medicines. During 973-1050 A. D. Al Biruni wrote on pharmaceutical manufacturing sciences in his book called Kitab-Al-Saydalah, in which he gave good description of properties of different drugs. Al Muwaffaq wrote how oxides and silicic acid can be used in treatment of diseases. Also he worked on toxic compounds like copper compounds during 10th century A. D. Roman and Greek civilizations were one of the most advanced civilizations of their time. Greeks had medical schools; oldest Greek school was in Cnidus in 700 B. C. Greeks used a system of medicine which was based upon restoring the balance of humours in the body. Evidences of surgeries including removal of tumors from stomach can be found. Pedanius dioscoridens wrote a book called de material medica concerning various medicines and drugs. Galen, a pharmacist from Rome described preparation of pharmaceutical compounds in his works Hippocrates of Kos is considered as the father of modern medicine. Hippocratic corpus is an important work of Hippocrates. Lipitor, a cholesterol pill produced by Pfizer is best selling drug today. Also drugs like heartburn pill called Astra-Zeneca and Asthma inhaler called Advair are also sold in great numbers. Johnson and Johnson, glaxo smith Kline, Bayer, cipla, etc. Are leading pharmaceutical manufacturers. Chinese developed another system of medicine based on Taoist physicians. Records of pharmaceutical products can be found in Shennong Bencao Jing of Han dynasty in 1sy century A.D.books like Suwen, Lingshu and huangdi neijing are fundamental books in Chinese medicine. Chinese medicine includes treatment by natural and traditional materials like animal bone powder or dried root powder, medicinal flowers, etc.. Pharmaceutical sciences will be of great importance in future. Even today there is no cure on diseases like AIDS and cancer. Many medicines have side effects. New diseases like swine flu and bird flu are emerging. Hence, it is essential to develop pharmaceutical manufacturing sciences further.
