When you peek outside and see nothing but a big blanket of white snow covering the ground, you know it's time to quickly figure out something for the kids to do. Kids get restless quickly when they're cooped up inside all day. And, what's worse is, you'll start getting frustrated with restless kids under your feet all day long and that's not good! Snow games and activities take a special effort, but you'll be glad you did it.

Playing video games and watching movies can only go so far. Eventually you'll need to get the kids outside and blow off some steam. It's time to grab the boots, mittens, and hats and brave the elements! It's time for some fun in the snow! Have you forgotten how to play in the snow or what kind of snow activities you used to do? Here's some reminders.

Snowman: All you need to make a snowman is, well, snow! But, it's the embellishments that make it really fun. Once you've rolled up three big snowballs ranging in sizes of big, medium, and little, grab a few items to create your snowman, or snowwoman! Start with a few rocks for the eyes and mouth, a carrot or short stick for the nose, and some longer sticks for the arms. If you have extra scarves and hats, you may want to add those so your snowman is bundled up and toasty warm. You can get as complicated or as simple as you want. Even Frosty the Snowman will be envious if you have very ambitious children. You may even want to create an entire Snow Family. This is an entertaining task that will keep kids busy for hours on end!

Snow Angels: Be sure to dress warm for this activity! In an area where the snow is soft and undisturbed, have your children lay down in the snow and move their arms up and down, and their legs in and out. Then, carefully help them stand up and step away. Turn around and look! See, didn't you always know your little one was an angel! If you have garland you can even form a little halo to complete the scene.

Snow Igloo or Snow Fort: With just a few buckets or other plastic containers, you can make snow "bricks" to build a structure. Lay out your foundation by shoveling or tromping the outline of your building. Press snow into plastic buckets, then turn the bucket over and plop the snow brick out on the ground. Carefully place it on your "foundation" and repeat. Build your walls as high as you can and even build interior walls if you want. Your kids may need a little lesson in this, but they'll quickly become enthralled with building their very own house. If you'd like, get out pictures beforehand of an igloo or a fort to give your kids ideas of where to start. You may even want to offer them some food coloring and water mixture and paint brushes to "paint" the walls or to create artwork. Don't forget to bring out some hot drinks for the workers!

Snowball Fight: Older kids really take to the idea of playing this special version of dodgeball. You can choose up sides, or it can be every kid for him or herself. Find or build snow banks for barriers behind which to hide, decide on the rules, and have at it! Grown ups ought to join in on this game as it burns a lot of calories and stress! Pack your snowballs just solid enough to fly, but soft enough so you get a good "poof" when it clobbers your opponent. If your kids haven't had a good snowball fight before, parents and grandparents may want to introduce them to the rules of this game played with snowballs.

Snow Sledding: You may not have a big hill in your yard. You may not have sleds and toboggans, either. But, what you do have is lots and lots of snow. If you have a snowbank with a safe landing area, you've got the making of a sledding hill for your little ones. Grab some pieces of cardboard, plastic, or even your plastic kiddie wading pool and head up to the top of that snowbank. For your littlest ones, this is quite enough. For bigger kids, you may need to do a little shoveling to create more of a challenge.

Get out the hot cocoa, the camera, and the cold weather gear and head outside to enjoy some great snow activities and games. Bundle your kids up all nice and cozy, and before long they'll be hootin' and hollerin' for all the neighbors to hear. They may even get some other kids outside to join in the fun, too!
