Your child's baptism, or christening if you prefer, is a special event. It is an amazing moment, and it deserves to be recognized and made truly memorable. Even though your baby won't remember the day, you and your family will and your child will enjoy hearing stories about this event as he or she grows up. With a little planning, you can give your child a beautiful, memorable baptism that will serve as a strong religious foundation for them.
Your child's baptism is an incredibly important part of their religious life, and it is something that you will want to be able to look back on with fond memories. Taking some time with your planning will help you hold a memorable and enjoyable event. The first step before you is to contact your church to find out what days they perform christening ceremonies. With that information in hand, you will be able to book the date for this momentous occasion and begin making the rest of your plans. Your next step is to choose the Godmother and Godfather. This is a huge honor. Not only do the Godparents assist the parents in the baby's religious upbringing, but they may also be chosen to be Legal Guardians if something should happen to you. It is important to choose people who will stay in contact regularly with the child, even if they should move away. Typically, people will choose either family or very close friends as Godparents. Some religions have baptism classes that parents must take before the ceremony can be performed. There are also additional requirements for some religions, so it's important to talk to your church so you can be sure you complete all the requirements. Once you are on track with the church for the baptism, have selected the dates and the chosen Godparents have agreed; you are ready to move on to invitations. You can choose store bought invitations, or you can have them custom made for a look that is as unique and beautiful as your baby. You may want to have a gathering after the ceremony for Godparents and all the people who choose to attend this amazing event. The first choice here is to decide where the gather will be held. For very small affairs with mostly family attending, you could have this at home and cater it yourself. For larger events you might want to see about renting a place that can hold more people. If your church does individual baptisms you can ask about renting a hall at the church. Once you know how many people are attending and where you will have the reception, you can meet with a caterer to decide on the menu. At some point during all this planning, you will be purchasing your child's outfit for the christening. Some families have heirloom gowns that are passed down through the generations. This is a lovely idea that brings additional sentiment to the day, but if your family does not have anything like this, or if you just don't care for the heirloom gown, you can find the perfect outfit for your child at the stores. Christening gowns can be purchased in a range of colors, styles and lengths. When you take the time to shop around, you are sure to find the perfect gown for your child's special moment. Finally, you may want to purchase a special gift for the child. You will want to choose something that they can always have to remind them of this occasion. One great choice is a new bible or prayer book. The details of the day; including the Godparents, priest, date and location; can then be added to the book. This would not only be a keepsake, but could also be used by your child throughout his or her life as a guide for making the right choices. |
