There once was a time when a person could graduate from high school and go straight into work. Those days appear to be disappearing. Now, many formerly unskilled occupations, whether it's on an assembly line or just answering the phones, now require what is now called "high school plus" educations. That is, a high school student needs up to two years additional training before he or she can land that post.

Now, many formerly unskilled occupations, whether it's on an assembly line or just answering the phones, now require what is now called "high school plus" educations. One such job is administrative assistant. Where the job used to be serving coffee, running errands, fielding the phone, and typing a memo, it's a lot more now. The candidate that usually gets the job has at least a working knowledge of several forms of business software, can do more than just chat on social networks, and a lot more.

Part of this is also due to the current national economy. The last recession saw a number of companies cut their expenses by cutting their employees. Those who are left behind are now doing a lot more with a lot less support. So, it isn't uncommon for the modern day assistant to do basic bookkeeping, some ad layout, or other work than answering the phone. Staying up to date on the latest information about administrative assistant programs will work in your favor and may bring quicker success.

Because of this, a number of vocational schools have become quite busy. Many of them are also now accredited and attached to some university program. After one or two years, the student will even walk out with a diploma or certificate. .

The only problem with this is financial aid. Unlike formal two or four year degrees, grants are generally restricted to the likes of federal, state, and maybe some local assistance. There aren't many scholarships out there from independent groups like there are for technicians or other such fields. Another way around this though is to find the best job one can and then enroll in an online school during off hours.

Survive this, and the payoff can be fairly impressive! The average administrative assistant earns around $42,000 in the corporate world. It can go higher if the job is in a specialized field such as medicine or law, which requires more training. The job usually also comes with benefits such as paid vacation, insurance and, if lucky, continued education perks. But before jumping into just any program, students should research all of their options, i.e., admin courses online, to make sure they are choosing the programs that best fit their needs.

It should be noted that education might play an even greater role in the future. There are projections that eventually the job will become so sophisticated it will require a four-year degree itself. Many of the top assistant positions already are putting out that they prefer this. Of course, the salaries then increase with the education.
