As you or your loved ones age, the likelihood of needing long term care will increase. 70 percent of people over the age of 65 will most likely require some form of long term care, so planning for future care services is something that most people should think about. Some may think that retirement or age 65 is a long time off, but it is better to make plans now instead of waiting until the last minute when you may not have the time or resources to properly plan for care.
When the time for long term care arrives, you should have a plan in place. We encourage you to start making your plans for care now so that you have the time you'll want and need to confidently make decisions for your future. Now is the time to make sure you have the funds and resources necessary to pay for the type of care you'll want later. Here are some recommendations of things you might want to consider when creating your own future care plans. Do you know what area or community you'll be retiring in? Do you know if these areas or communities have facilities that provide the types of long term care that you might need? These are important first questions to ask yourself whether you are planning care for yourself or a loved one. Determine where you'll be retiring, then start looking around to see if that area or community has care services that will match up with your future needs. If you should find a facility that you like in your community, it is a good idea to go visit it and experience the environment as well as the type of people who work care providers first hand. It might seem like common sense, but another part of effective long term care planning is to involve loved one or family members in the process. They might have experience in planning for long term care services or might think of some aspect that you may have overlooked. When you involved your family and friends in your plans, you give them a chance to understand your plans and your wishes. This will just make the situation easier when the time to put your long term care services plan into place. When loved ones are involved in your care plans, they might suggest the option of receiving care in the comfort of your own home or in their home as well. You may want to explore the option of home care and decide who you'd want to take care of you if you became seriously ill or disabled in the future. Once that decision has been made, you may want to find out what resources and supports would be available together. Something else to consider is whether or not you will need to plan for special health conditions that might develop in the future. Assess your health risk factors with your doctor. Your doctor will be able to make recommendations on how to decrease your risks for poor health conditions that might develop in the future by taking your lifestyle choices, your family history and medical history into consideration. Your doctor might recommend lifestyle changes such as eating healthy, maintaining physical activity, not smoking, maintaining a safe environment, having a social support group, and keeping yourself mentally stimulated and socially engaged. Talking with your doctor now will definitely help you plan for your future. As you plan for your long term care, you are actually ensuring that you have a greater measure of independence in the future.
