Crib Death is a syndrome that causes the sudden death of an infant. It is a sad thing to lose an infant to such an unexplained ailment without warning. Although there has not been a firm finding of what causes the death there are several tips available on what to do to possibly help avoid it. Sudden infant death syndrome and cot death are two other names for crib death. All of these names convey the same type of death that is not able to be explained after investigation, evaluation of past medical history, or autopsy. The United States have seen the deaths reported by this syndrome cut in half between 1992 and 2004. Some individual's in the medical industry believe that this is due to deaths being classified to things other than this syndrome though. One of the key things to help prevent this type of death is believed to be having the baby sleep on their back. Around the world the phrases Back to Sleep and Back to Bed are being repeated to parents to heighten the awareness. It is thought that a baby may not respond to sleep apnea if they are sleeping too soundly on their stomach. Also, since the baby is not fully controlling their head they may end up smothering themselves in their sleep when lying on their stomach. Breastfeeding is another point that my possibly prevent the syndrome. It was found that one-fifth of the infants that died of this syndrome were breastfed at some point. This study was conducted in 2003 in Chicago, Illinois. If a parent smokes the secondhand smoke can lend a hand in crib death. When the U. S. Surgeon General looked at this syndrome's infant's body fluids they found a large concentration of nicotine in many of them. It is recommended that smoking parents either stop smoking or do so only outside of the house. It is also recommended to use caution with the type of bedding that is used by the infant. So do not fill the crib with pillows, blankets or stuffed animals as they all create a possible smothering effect. It is recommended to place the baby in a sleep sack if the baby needs to be kept warm as it will not cover the baby's head or face. Crib death is something that there is no sure cause for at this time. Although the number of deaths has gone done some people in the medical field believe it is more a reclassification of the death cause then the number actually going down.
