With young children, bedwetting isn't an uncommon occurrence. During the time of toilet training, it is important that parents know when to start it, and also to be aware that there will be wet sheets at night after daytime control is established. Nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting) is to be expected until the child has reached the age of around four. Parents need to understand why this occurs, and especially if it continues to occur as the child grows older.

Bedwetting is a common occurrence in families with small children. There is always the transition from diapers to regular underwear that rarely takes place without any wet sheets and feelings of frustration by the parents. The issue of children wetting the bed is something that should be expected in the early years and in order to deal with this situation in the best way, the first step any parent should take is to understand why this is happening.

Physical development of the child's bladder can be a cause of bedwetting. Some children have to wait until they are a bit older and their bladder has developed enough to hold more fluid before they will consistently have a dry bed in the morning. Parents need to reassure their child that it isn't their fault, and to explain to them that when they are a bit older, their bladders will be stronger and able to last the night.

Slow physical development may also be why bedwetting occurs. The nerves and muscles that are used to hold one's bladder are sometimes simply not strong enough to stop bedwetting at night. The will may be there, and you may be able to help your child understand what they need to do in order to prevent urination while asleep, but all of that will not stop the problem if their body is not developed enough.

Bedwetting does not have to be linked to physical problems, either. It may be a case of the child having a significant amount of mental anxiety or stress about a problem they are facing in their life. A sleeping child may not be completely at rest if their subconscious is in turmoil. This kind of situation can lead to urination while sleeping, further adding to a child's mental burdens.

The best thing a parent can do to prevent bedwetting at night is to understand and accept why it is happening. Once a parent realizes that the reasons why the bedwetting occurs may be well beyond the control of the child, it is easier to deal with the situation. Bladder training does not have to be a big deal; it only becomes one if the parents turn it into a major problem through their own lack of understanding.
