Making homemade Valentine cards is an old fashioned idea that is still very popular, especially for Grandma and Grandpa and the other elders in your child's life. All the store-bought Valentine cards in the world can't compare to a simple glued and glittered Valentine outstretched in a little one's hand.
Making homemade Valentine cards is an old fashioned idea that is still very popular, especially for Grandma and Grandpa and the other elders in your child's life. All the store-bought Valentine cards in the world can't compare to a simple glued and glittered Valentine outstretched in a little one's hand. Even if your child is very young or not at all talented at art, a Valentine card is all about the sentiment involved. You're not looking for perfection, just a simple statement of adoration. Get your supplies together and gather your children around the table. It's time to create a few messages of love straight from the heart! Heart In Hand Valentine - This is one of the easiest and sweetest Valentine you can give to a Grandparent. There's nothing sweeter than a tiny hand expressing a lovely Valentine sentiment. You'll need two colors of construction paper (red and pink being traditional), a pencil, some colored markers, safe scissors, and hobby glue. Simply trace the outline of your child's hand with fingers spread out on one colored piece of construction paper with a pencil. Cut the hand outline out. Then, on the other color of construction paper, draw a small heart that will fit in the palm of the cut out hand outline and cut that small heart out. Now, glue the little heart in the palm of the cut out hand. Have your child write a "Happy Valentine's Day" greeting inside the heart, something classic like "I love you with all my heart" will always get Grandparents all misty eyed. If your child is too young to write, a little picture drawn on the heart would be nice. Ribbon Valentine Heart - This Valentine card is a little more advanced and would be perfect for a child who enjoys crafts. It requires some sturdy construction paper or card stock, pencil, markers, other embellishments, scissors (if you have design-cutting scissors for scrapbooking those work great), hole punch, ribbon, or yarn. Start by drawing a heart on the construction paper or card stock. Then, cut out the heart using special scissors if you can, or regular ones will work, too. Using the hole punch, have your child punch holes along the edge of the heart, being sure to end up with an even number of holes. Taking the ribbon or yarn, fold in half, and start looping one half through the holes at the bottom of the heart and up one side, ending with the loose ribbon at the top. Then repeat up the other side with the other half, ending with two loose ribbon ends at the top of the heart. Tie those two ends together to form a pretty bow. Now your child can decorate the heart with sentiments, glitter, stickers, or whatever a pretty Valentine should have! Collage Card For Valentine's Day - There may be some people who don't quite fit the glittery heart Valentine card as much as others. Perhaps a Grandfather or Father would appreciate a card that expresses their unique interests. Gather together some magazines or catalogs that have pictures they might like, then get out the construction paper, scissors, and glue. Start with the stack of catalogs or magazines that feature items the card recipient is interested in and start cutting out pictures. Fold the construction paper in half to form a card shape. Have your child arrange the pictures however he or she would like, gluing as you go. Then, using markers or crayons, continue to decorate the card with Valentine sentiments and pictures if your child chooses. Have your child write their own Valentine greetings, or if the child is very young, a simple scribble or two will be just fine. No matter what kind of homemade Valentine card your child makes, the fact that he or she made it with their very own little hands is what warms the heart. Start today gathering your material so you'll be ready to create some wonderful Valentine memories. Happy Valentine's Day!
