A job is always a good idea but how can you make sure that you can fit this in around all your other classroom commitments.

In these current difficult economic times, students are finding it even harder to pay for their education. With having to pay for books, food, rent and social activities, students are having to find alternative ways to find extra money. A job is always a good idea but how can you make sure that you can fit this in around all your other classroom commitments.

In order for a job to fit around studies why not look at doing some sort of shift work. Students have always been associated with bar jobs. Employers who advertise this type of role around campus will more than likely be aware of the constraints due to studies. The best way to find these types of roles is to check notice boards and university careers services on campus. Local employers might even use the university website to post dedicated jobs on the boards.

However, the traditional student jobs, such as bar and shop work, are no longer the only way in which to make some extra cash whilst at university.

The role of the internet has expanded so freelancing on different roles can be as rewarding as any traditional roles while still allowing students to complete their studies.

Working as a freelance writer online is an ideal way in which students can earn money. As with shift and evening work, freelancers working online can fit their work around lectures and seminars. The unique attraction of freelancing work is that it is even more flexible. Freelancers can largely work when they want.

Freelancers are finding that increasingly employers are using them to control costs of permanent staff and are looking to outsource work as varied as admin, IT, marketing, clerical, web development, copywriters and translators to name some of the areas. The skills that students can gain doing these jobs can also be of an advantage. Computer skills will improve, research and typing skills get better and students get the chance to improve their time management skills working to the deadlines of these projects.

If your skills in IT are sufficiently good, even a basic knowledge of word and excel will help, then you can have a great chance of succeeding in the freelance job market. Some typical freelance roles are copywriting and programming, but more traditional office jobs such as data entry and admin can also be picked up fairly easily.

A good way to start freelancing is to sign up to a freelance website where as long as you have the right skills at a good level you will be able to find employers looking for you. These websites can give you access to a large range of employers where you can make as much or as little money as you need to make. Limited only by your own availability and commitment you can make enough money to survive or even perhaps improve your quality of life by a good deal.
